Summer is approaching, you want to set sail, you have found THE boat, but you need a trailer to transport it. You are planning to buy a second-hand trailer that you have found online, but it is not registered.
Are you allowed to drive this trailer? Before you sign, find out about the conditions for putting a trailer on the road.
In order to be authorised to drive a trailer, the French Highway Code requires that all trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 500kg needs to be registered. In the event of an inspection, you must present:
- The registration document for your car AND for your trailer,
- The insurance of your car AND for your trailer,
- The technical inspection of your car.
Your trailer is not registered?
The procedures for obtaining a trailer registration document are the same as for registering any vehicle. You must go to the website of the Agence nationale des titres sécurisés (ANTS) and start the registration procedure.
To register a trailer, you will need to provide its certificate of conformity.
The certificate of conformity is a unique and official document given to the first owner, and must be provided at each sale.
As a manufacturer, we can issue a duplicate certificate of conformity under certain conditions. For example, the duplicate cannot be issued for any trailer manufactured before 2000. Before taking any steps, it is important to know that the issue of a duplicate certificate of conformity as well as the issue of a vehicle registration document are subject to taxes and administrative costs. To ensure that you are not in possession of a stolen trailer we ask you to provide the following documents
- A copy of your identity document,
- A copy of the purchase invoice of the trailer with the serial number,
- A photo of the tare plate of the trailer with the serial number on it.
Without these documents we will not be able to process your request.
If you would like to know if a duplicate certificate of conformity can be issued for your trailer, you can contact us here.
ATTENTION
Trailers are vehicles for which homologation is only done on the original parts. As they are not subject to technical inspection, only this certificate attests to their conformity. However, modifications to components can be made over the years, which will render the trailer non-compliant with its original approval. If the characteristics defined in the certificate are not consistent with the current components of your trailer, you will be liable in the event of an accident.
To ensure that your trailer complies with the regulations, we recommend the annual maintenance service: Goliath Service, carried out by an approved boating professional near you. At each service, our agent will give you a certificate attesting to the conformity of your trailer. This certificate complies with European standards, where maintenance is already compulsory in certain neighbouring countries (Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain). For more information on our maintenance service, you can consult the Goliath Service page, or contact us here.
If your trailer is too old or does not comply with the current approvals, we will be happy to recommend a new trailer with the same characteristics. Please contact us here for more information or view all our trailer models online.
The Goliath team wishes you a safe journey!
